I think these events, all taking place in the same year, were all connected. And finally, also in 1887, Alcide Droz & Fils patented a trademark of a bear and flag with the word Berna, and also registered "West End Watch Co." on a movement. And also in the same year of 1887, the Bombay firm was renamed the West End Watch Co. Also in 1887, Arnold Charpie retired from the Bombay firm, and it became wholly owned by Droz & Cie. In 1887 Alcide Droz & Fils underwent another change of name, becoming Droz & Cie (Droz and Co.). The firm was evidently a joint venture between Charpie and Alcide Droz & Fils, with the intention of mainly, but not exclusively, importing watches manufactured at the St Imier factory. Some reports say that Charpie was the Indian representative of Droz, but I haven't found anything to substantiate this. In 1884 a watch business was started in Bombay by Alcide Droz & Fils and Arnold Charpie. On 16 October 1885 they registered a trademark of an eagle carrying a watch in its beak with above it the name "West End Watch". They registered a trademark of a flying eagle carrying a watch in its beak, surrounded by the words "Imperméable Brevete Dans Tous Pays" (Waterproof Patented in All Countries). The firm was recorded as makers of watches, specialising in waterproof (imperméable) watches. Two of the sons were the brothers Louis, the elder, and Constant. In 1883 the company changed its registered name to Alcide Droz & Fils (Alcide Droz and Sons). This company subsequently went through many changes of name and registration, and registered many trade marks. Imier in the Swiss Canton of Berne founded the watchmaking company Droz and Perret. The company early on saw the market potential for wristwatches, producing finished models as early as 1905. Sandoz was a mechanical genius his company not only made its own movements called Calilbers in-house (one of the few Swiss companies to do so), but also developed proprietary watch-making machinery (lathes, milling machines, etc.) which was sold to other manufacturers. The story of Tavannes begins in 1891 with the founding of the company by a 40-year-old master watchmaker, Henri-Frederic Sandoz, in the town of Tavannes, today a small city of approximately 3,500. The company even made a custom watch for the king of England that eventually became one of the company’s iconic models. The company not only made movements for its own branded watches, but supplied movements to other prestigious watch manufacturers and retailers, including Jaeger LeCoultre, Dunhill, Hermes, and Cartier. It employed around 2,000 workers, and had turned the little town of Tavannes, Switzerland, into a booming manufacturing center. During its heyday in the 1920s and 30s, five manufacturing plants turned out as many as 4,000 watch movements a day.
